The Apple TV 4K stores the EDIDs it has already tested successfully. Load one it has not seen before and it asks to run its Dolby Vision and/or HDR test again. Load one it has already passed, and it will not ask a second time.
The retest prompt is expected
To the Apple TV, every new EDID looks like a different display. Since switching EDIDs is exactly what the DR HDMI 8K is for, a test prompt after a change is normal. Let the test finish before you judge the picture.
A related point from the manual's Dolby Vision FAQ: the Apple TV 4K has no DCI-P3 output option, yet it does send DCI-P3 colors when the Dolby Vision EDID is set to DCI-P3 primaries. On a display without a DCI-P3 profile this shows up as oversaturated colors and a red tint on faces. The fix is to send BT.2020 primaries instead.
Atmos missing only on the Apple TV
If other sources get Atmos through the chain but the Apple TV does not, the manual points to the Apple TV audio setting Change Format. Some owners enabled it before adding the DR HDMI 8K, to get at least Dolby Digital 5.1 out of their TV. Turn Change Format off and the Apple TV detects the unit as Atmos compatible.
Apps that show 5.1, and Netflix audio quality
An app may still show 5.1 in its menu at first. The manual explains that as long as Atmos appears under the Apple TV audio settings, you can start content you know carries Atmos and the app will adjust. Netflix and Prime Video behave similarly here.
If Atmos works in other apps but Netflix never goes beyond 5.1, open your Netflix account settings in a browser on a computer, set playback quality (data usage per screen) to High, and restart the Apple TV.
A repeatable Apple TV test routine
- Select the EDID you want to try.
- Complete any Dolby Vision or HDR test the Apple TV requests.
- Check that RX and TX show as connected and that EDID RX lists the capabilities you intended.
- Confirm Change Format is off before blaming the HDMI chain for missing Atmos.
- If results look inconsistent, restart the Apple TV; the manual notes it is always safe to restart a source after an EDID change.
