Sorting Out HDMI Handshake Issues in Projector Setups

Projector setups often add an AVR and a long cable between source and screen, and each link joins the handshake. A fixed EDID separates negotiation faults from the rest.

Test in a way you can repeat.

Lock down the EDID first.

Give the source a stable EDID: copy the projector’s, choose a predefined table, or copy and modify selected flags. Then change one setting per test and watch RX and TX status on the OLED or web server.

What the results can and cannot show

Brief blanking when resolution, frame rate or HDR mode changes is normal. The DR HDMI 8K answers another question: does a given set of advertised capabilities change how the chain behaves?

Keep in mind: a well-chosen EDID cannot make up for a cable without enough bandwidth, or repair a faulty HDMI port on the projector, AVR or source.

Suggested order of tests

  1. Check that source, AVR, projector and cable all support the format you are aiming for.
  2. Begin with a lower-bandwidth format that is known to work, such as a 4K60 4:2:0 or 1080p table.
  3. Read the projector’s EDID under EDID TX, or pass it through with COPY TX SINK.
  4. Present a predefined table or a modified copy to the source, and restart the source if it keeps the old format.
  5. Change one capability per test, for example the HDR flag or the maximum FRL rate, and note the outcome.

Changing everything at once may restore a picture, but you will not know which change mattered.
