HDMI scrambling explained

Scrambling shuffles the data on a fast HDMI link into a pseudo-random pattern so no single frequency dominates, and the receiving end unscrambles it bit for bit.

The short explanation

At high clock rates, repetitive data creates strong interference at specific frequencies — bad for the signal and bad for everything nearby. Scrambling shuffles the bit pattern to spread that energy out. The receiver reverses it exactly, so nothing is lost.

It is required above 340MHz, which is most of what 4K uses.

Where you run into it

Both ends have to agree. If the source scrambles and the sink does not expect it, the result is no picture or a picture full of sparkles — the classic symptom of an older device in a modern chain.

As a status field it is a useful confirmation: scrambling active means the link really is running at high-bandwidth settings, not just claiming to.
