Projectors explained

A projector casts the image onto a separate screen, which usually puts it far from the sources — and that distance shapes almost every HDMI issue it has.

The short explanation

A television sits beside its sources. A projector sits across the room or on a ceiling, which means a long HDMI run, usually an AV receiver in the middle, and often a screen-masking or lens-memory routine that adds delay before it is ready.

Where you run into it

Three things follow from that. The cable is doing real work, so bandwidth failures are common and look like device faults. The receiver sits between source and projector, so it decides what capability data the source sees. And the projector's slow wake-up means the source may decide nothing is connected during the gap.

Projectors also rarely support native Dolby Vision, which is why LLDV comes up so often here: let the source do the tone mapping and hand the projector a finished picture.
