RJ45 explained

RJ45 is the familiar eight-contact network jack. On AV equipment it connects the device to your LAN for setup and control rather than for carrying video.

The short explanation

RJ45 is the connector; Ethernet is what runs over it. On AV hardware the port is there for control and configuration, not for streaming video.

Where you run into it

Plenty of devices are far more capable over the network than they are from their front panel. Without the cable you have a small display and one control; with it you have a full interface, remote control and firmware updates.

Wired is the right choice in a rack: no wireless setup, no dropouts behind a metal panel, and it works before anything is configured.

How the DR HDMI 8K handles it

On the DR HDMI 8K the RJ45 port is mandatory for the embedded web server and for IP control. Connect it to your router or switch and the unit picks up an address by DHCP, then shows it on the OLED. Without it you can still cycle info pages and use the on-device menu, but the EDID, Dolby Vision and configuration workflows all live in the browser.
