Static IP explained

A static IP address is one you enter on the device by hand, so it comes back with the same address every time rather than asking the router for one.

The short explanation

You configure three things: the address, the subnet mask (which says how large the local network is, usually 255.255.255.0) and the gateway (usually your router). From then on the device uses that address every time it starts.

Where you run into it

Anything a control system addresses by number needs a stable address. A static IP guarantees that. So does a DHCP reservation on the router, which many people find easier to manage because all the addresses stay in one place.

The trap is picking an address inside the router's DHCP pool, so that the router later hands the same one to something else. Choose an address outside the pool, or reserve it.

And if you get it wrong, the device disappears from the network entirely — which is why knowing the recovery route before you start is worth thirty seconds.
