The short explanation
Two ways for a controller to stay informed. Polling: ask for the status every second or so and compare. Interrupts: the device sends a message the moment something changes.
Where you run into it
Polling is simple but wasteful, and it always lags by up to one polling interval. Interrupts are immediate and quiet, so a touch panel updates the instant a source is switched on rather than a second later.
The reason it is not on by default is that unsolicited messages confuse a controller that was not expecting them. Some control systems need it, others break with it — hence the switch.
How the DR HDMI 8K handles it
IP interrupts are off by default on the DR HDMI 8K and can be switched on in the CONFIG section. Turn them on if your control system expects the unit to announce changes; leave them off if it polls.
