Four practical DR HDMI 8K tips for control, EDID changes and ARC audio

Small details from the end of the manual: how some control systems end a command, when a source needs a full power cycle, why Atmos over ARC depends on the cable, and how 4:2:2 is processed.

Control system line endings

Some control systems, iRule among them, need \x0D instead of \r — and \x0A instead of \n — to terminate an IP command string. See the IP and Telnet chapter for the command syntax itself.

Sources that need a power cycle

Some sources need the power cord removed and reconnected between EDID changes. A hot-plug event is usually enough, but where a source refuses to pick up a new EDID, a full power cycle is the next step rather than a sign that the EDID is wrong.

Atmos over ARC needs the right cable

Atmos via ARC requires an HDMI cable that supports 192kHz ARC. A cable can carry a 600MHz video signal perfectly and still fail on the 192kHz audio signal, so a cable that works for 600MHz video is no proof that it can carry 192kHz ARC audio.

4:2:2 is always 12-bit

Any 4:2:2 signal is always processed at 12-bit and is never clipped. That is why specifications say “up to 12-bit” rather than listing separate 4:2:2 bit depths.
